Los Angeles, October 12, 2025 (Agencies) – Diane Keaton, the celebrated Academy Award-winning actress known for her iconic roles in Annie Hall, The Godfather trilogy, and Father of the Bride, has died at the age of 79. Her death was confirmed on Saturday, October 11, by a family spokesperson, with the news first reported by People magazine. Keaton passed away at her home in California, following what friends described as a sudden decline in health.
Born in Los Angeles in 1946, Keaton rose to prominence in the early 1970s with her portrayal of Kay Adams-Corleone in The Godfather films. Her breakthrough came with Woody Allen’s 1977 romantic comedy Annie Hall, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress, along with a Golden Globe and BAFTA Award for her performance. Her distinctive style—marked by menswear-inspired outfits and wide-brimmed hats—became a hallmark both on and off screen.
Over a career spanning more than five decades, Keaton starred in a wide range of films including The First Wives Club, The Family Stone, Because I Said So, and And So It Goes. She also collaborated extensively with Woody Allen in films such as Play It Again, Sam, Sleeper, Love and Death, and Manhattan. Her final screen appearance was in the 2024 comedy Summer Camp, alongside Eugene Levy and Kathy Bates.
Keaton was also a director, beginning with her 1987 documentary Heaven, which explored beliefs about the afterlife. Her 1995 film Unstrung Heroes was selected for the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section, and she later directed Hanging Up in 2000, starring herself, Meg Ryan, and Lisa Kudrow.
Producer and longtime friend Dori Rath confirmed Keaton’s passing to CBS News. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical emergency at her Brentwood residence on Saturday morning, though the cause of death has not been publicly disclosed. Her family has requested privacy during this time of mourning.
Tributes have poured in from across Hollywood, with co-stars and directors remembering Keaton as a brilliant, fearless performer whose work shaped generations of cinema. Director Woody Allen was reported to be “extremely distraught,” while actress Bette Midler called her “extraordinary” in a heartfelt tribute.
Keaton is survived by her two children and leaves behind a legacy of artistic excellence, individuality, and enduring influence in American film.
