Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt – October 12, 2025 (Agencies) – Three senior officials from Qatar’s Amiri Diwan were killed in a car accident near Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh on Saturday, while traveling to participate in preparations for a high-level summit on the Gaza ceasefire agreement.
The incident occurred approximately 50 kilometers from the city, when their vehicle reportedly overturned on a curve, according to Egyptian security sources.
The deceased officials were identified as Saud bin Thamer Al Thani, Abdullah Ghanem Al Khayarin, and Hassan Jaber Al Jaber, all of whom were part of Qatar’s protocol team. Two other diplomats, Abdullah Issa Al Kuwari and Mohammed Abdulaziz Al Buainain, sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Sharm el-Sheikh.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Qatari Embassy in Cairo expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the accident as a “tragic traffic incident” that occurred while the officials were performing their duties. The embassy extended condolences to the families of the deceased and offered prayers for the swift recovery of the injured. It also confirmed that arrangements were underway to repatriate the bodies and the injured to Doha later the same day.
The accident comes at a sensitive diplomatic moment, as Sharm el-Sheikh is set to host a global summit on Monday, co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi and U.S. President Donald Trump, aimed at finalizing the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Qatar has played a key mediating role in the negotiations, alongside Egypt and Turkey.
The tragic loss of the Qatari officials has cast a somber tone over the upcoming summit, with regional leaders expected to pay tribute to their service. The incident also underscores the risks faced by diplomatic personnel operating in high-stakes environments.
