Washington, D.C. (Agencies) July 17, 2025: The White House has confirmed that President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a common and non-serious vein condition, following medical evaluation prompted by visible swelling in his legs.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the 79-year-old president underwent a comprehensive examination, including vascular studies and Doppler ultrasounds, which revealed the condition. Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when veins in the legs fail to efficiently return blood to the heart, often due to weakened or damaged valves. The condition affects approximately one in twenty adults and is considered routine among individuals over the age of 70.
Leavitt emphasized that no signs of deep vein thrombosis, arterial disease, heart failure, or systemic illness were found. Laboratory tests and an echocardiogram confirmed normal cardiac structure and function. The president reportedly remains in excellent health and is experiencing no discomfort.
The announcement follows public speculation after recent photographs showed swelling in Trump’s legs and bruising on his hands. The bruising was attributed to minor soft tissue irritation from frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin, which he takes as part of a standard cardiovascular regimen.
The White House described the diagnosis as routine and consistent with age-related vascular changes, reaffirming that the president is fit to carry out his duties. The medical update was released in the spirit of transparency amid growing public interest in the president’s health.
