New York (Khyber Mail): In a landmark achievement, Uzbekistan has been elected to the United Nations Statistical Commission for the 2026-2029 term, marking the country’s first-ever membership in this prestigious global body.
The UN Statistical Commission, established in 1947 under the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), serves as the principal intergovernmental organization responsible for setting strategic directions in international statistics and coordinating the development of universal statistical standards and methodologies. The Commission consists of 24 member states, elected for four-year terms, ensuring geographic representation in global statistical policymaking.
Uzbekistan’s election is widely seen as international recognition of the country’s sweeping reforms under President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, which have strengthened Uzbekistan’s role in global affairs. The country’s statistical system has undergone significant modernization, aligning with international standards and improving data transparency.
With full membership, Uzbekistan will now have the opportunity to:
- Shape global statistical policies and contribute to international data governance.
- Showcase its national experience and reform achievements in statistical methodologies.
- Learn from advanced international practices to further enhance its statistical infrastructure.
- Strengthen international cooperation in data collection, analysis, and policy development.
Officials from Uzbekistan’s National Statistics Committee have expressed optimism about the country’s growing influence in global statistical affairs. Behzod Khamrayev, Chairman of the committee, recently met with Stefan Schweinfest, Director of the UN Statistics Division, to discuss Uzbekistan’s statistical transformation and future collaborations.
This milestone underscores Uzbekistan’s commitment to data-driven governance, international cooperation, and its expanding role in shaping global statistical standards. The country’s participation in the UN Statistical Commission is expected to bring new opportunities for research, policy development, and economic planning on an international scale.
