Tel Aviv, June 12, 2026 (Agencies) — The United States military has begun constructing a large base near the Gaza border, intended to serve as a headquarters for military and civilian personnel tasked with implementing President Donald Trump’s Gaza plan, according to a report by Israel Hayom.
The facility, located near Re’im in southern Israel, will replace the multinational headquarters previously based in Kiryat Gat, which dissolved after the outbreak of the Israel–Iran war. Construction is being carried out in full coordination with the Israeli Defense Ministry and the IDF, which are providing logistical support.
Tenders have already been issued for mobile structures and a command-and-control tower, with temporary facilities expected to house personnel until permanent infrastructure is completed. The base is designed to host US forces alongside international organizations and civilian experts working on Gaza’s rehabilitation, including education, infrastructure, and rubble removal.
International participation remains mixed. Countries such as Indonesia, Morocco, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, and Albania have confirmed involvement, while Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Azerbaijan have expressed preliminary interest. However, most countries have suspended participation due to the ongoing war with Iran.
Israel has opposed the involvement of states it considers hostile, including Pakistan and Türkiye. Meanwhile, Hamas’ refusal to disarm remains the main obstacle to the plan’s success. Recent Cairo talks failed to produce an agreement, raising doubts about whether the base will serve as an operational hub or remain limited to planning.
Israeli security sources caution that the likelihood of renewed fighting in Gaza is greater than the chance of a diplomatic breakthrough, underscoring the uncertainty surrounding Trump’s post-war initiative.
