Washington, September 26, 2025 (Agencies): The United States has approved the sale of up to 400 AIM-120D-3 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs) to Germany, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on September 25.
The Foreign Military Sales (FMS) package, valued at an estimated USD 1.23 billion, also includes associated equipment, spares, training, and logistical support.
According to the DSCA, the deal will significantly enhance Germany’s air-to-air combat capabilities, particularly for its Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II fighter jets, while strengthening interoperability with NATO allies. “The proposed sale will improve Germany’s capability to meet current and future threats by providing increased air-to-air capability for the German F-35 programme and supporting German and shared NATO planning, training, and operational requirements,” the agency said in a statement.
This marks the latest in a series of US arms approvals for Germany’s air force. In July 2023, Berlin received clearance for 969 AIM-120C-8 missiles, following an earlier approval in July 2022 for 105 AIM-120C-8s as part of its F-35 weapons package. The German Luftwaffe already operates earlier AMRAAM variants on its Eurofighter Typhoons, alongside MBDA’s Meteor beyond-visual-range missile.
The latest sale, however, is contingent upon US Congressional approval before contracts are finalized and deliveries can begin.
Defense analysts note that the addition of the AIM-120D-3, the most advanced AMRAAM variant, will provide Germany with extended range, improved targeting, and higher survivability against modern aerial threats.
