Kyiv (Agencies) — July 23, 2025: The Ukrainian Air Force has confirmed the loss of a French-supplied Mirage 2000-5 fighter jet during a flight mission over Volyn Oblast in western Ukraine on Tuesday evening, July 22, marking the first reported crash of the aircraft since its induction into Ukrainian service earlier this year.
According to military officials, the jet suffered a technical malfunction shortly after takeoff from Dubno Air Base, prompting the pilot to report the issue and eject safely. Search and rescue teams located the aviator in stable condition, and no casualties were reported on the ground.
The Mirage 2000-5, part of a six-jet donation from France under a multibillion-euro military aid package, had been modified for air-to-ground missions and equipped with SCALP-EG cruise missiles, MICA air-to-air missiles, and AASM Hammer precision-guided bombs. Ukrainian crews underwent training in France before the aircraft were deployed in February 2025.
President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged the loss in a public address, clarifying that the aircraft was not shot down by Russian forces and commending the pilot’s professionalism. The Ukrainian Air Force has launched an investigation into the incident, with a special commission appointed to determine the cause1.
The crash comes amid growing concerns over Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and reliance on foreign military aid. Newly appointed Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal stated this week that Ukraine will require at least $120 billion in defense funding for 2026, citing a $6 billion shortfall in weapons procurement following meetings with international donors in Germany.
France’s Mirage 2000 jets, originally scheduled for retirement by 2029, were introduced to bolster Ukraine’s aging fleet of MiG-29 and Su-27 fighters, alongside F-16s received from European partners in 2024.
The incident has reignited debate over the sustainability of Ukraine’s Western-supplied air assets and the urgent need for modern air defense systems to counter Russian missile threats.
