Peacehaven, East Sussex, October 5, 2025 (Agencies): British police have launched an investigation into a suspected arson attack at a mosque in the south coast town of Peacehaven, treating the incident as a hate crime. The attack took place late on Saturday night, just days after a deadly assault on a synagogue in Manchester heightened concerns over rising religiously motivated violence in the country.

Emergency services were called to the mosque on Phyllis Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. after reports of a blaze at the building’s front entrance and a vehicle parked outside. No injuries were reported, but the fire caused significant damage to the entrance area and the car.

CCTV footage reviewed by Sussex Police showed two masked individuals approaching the mosque, pouring a flammable liquid at the entrance, and setting it alight. The same individuals then ignited the vehicle before fleeing the scene. The act has been described by police as “reckless” and “appalling,” and the case is being investigated as arson with intent to endanger life.

Sussex Police have released CCTV images of the suspects and appealed to the public for help in identifying them. Increased patrols have been deployed around places of worship, and officers are working closely with local Muslim community leaders to provide security and reassurance.

The attack follows Thursday’s deadly assault on a synagogue in Manchester, where two people were killed and three others were seriously injured. The two incidents have sparked nationwide concern over escalating hate crimes targeting religious communities.

Local officials and political leaders have condemned the attack. Labour MP Chris Ward called it “an act of hatred with no place in our community,” while Lewes District Council expressed solidarity with the Muslim community. Leaders from the Green Party have urged authorities to examine whether the attack could constitute an act of terrorism.

The investigation, named Operation Spey, remains ongoing. Police have urged residents with CCTV, doorbell camera, dashcam, or mobile footage from the area on Saturday night to come forward. No arrests have been made so far.
