Damascus, Syria (Agencies) Aug 2, 2025 — Türkiye and Syria are reportedly finalizing a landmark security and military agreement set to be announced later this month, marking a dramatic shift in regional defense cooperation. The accord is expected to include the establishment of three Turkish military bases in Syria: Palmyra, Homs’ Tiyas (T-4) air base, and Aleppo’s Menagh air base.
According to diplomatic sources and regional analysts, the agreement stems from Syria’s formal request for military assistance to rebuild its security infrastructure following years of conflict and institutional collapse. Türkiye’s Defense Ministry has confirmed ongoing negotiations, emphasizing that initial support will focus on non-combat roles such as training, advisory services, and the transfer of military know-how.
The planned Turkish bases are strategically located:
- Palmyra: A historic crossroads in central Syria, offering logistical depth and access to desert operations.
- Tiyas (T-4) Air Base: One of Syria’s largest airfields, previously targeted in regional conflicts, now poised for joint use.
