London, December 10, 2025 (Agencies) – Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has reportedly been dropped from consideration for a role on a proposed US-led “board of peace” for Gaza after objections from Arab and Muslim governments, the Financial Times reported Monday.

Blair was the only figure named when US President Donald Trump announced a 20-point plan in September to end Israel’s war on Gaza, describing him as a “very good man.” Blair praised the plan as “bold and intelligent” and signaled his willingness to serve on the board, which Trump himself would chair.

However, diplomats from several Arab and Muslim states objected to Blair’s involvement, citing his controversial legacy in the Middle East. As prime minister, Blair strongly supported the US-led “war on terror” and sent tens of thousands of British troops to join the 2003 invasion of Iraq, launched on false claims about weapons of mass destruction. In the region, he remains widely viewed as partially responsible for the devastation that followed.

Since leaving office in 2007, Blair established the Tony Blair Institute (TBI), which has worked with governments accused of repression. His institute was also linked to a project led by Israeli business figures developing “day-after” plans for Gaza, including proposals for a coastal resort dubbed the “Trump Riviera” and a manufacturing hub named after Elon Musk — ideas criticized as ignoring human rights and threatening Palestinian displacement.

There was no immediate comment from Blair’s office. An ally quoted by the FT rejected claims that regional opposition had forced him out, insisting discussions were ongoing. Another source suggested Blair could still return “in a different capacity,” noting he remains favored by both Washington and Tel Aviv.

Trump’s Gaza plan led to a tenuous ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, though Israeli forces have continued attacks across the besieged territory. Gaza authorities report at least 377 people killed since the ceasefire took effect in October, and more than 70,000 Palestinians killed since Israel launched its war in October 2023.
