Hamilton, December 15, 2025 (Agencies) – Scientists have reported the discovery of a massive geological structure hidden beneath Bermuda’s waters, describing it as “unlike anything else on Earth.”
The formation, identified through seismic studies and published in Geophysical Research Letters, consists of an unusually thick rock layer extending nearly 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) beneath the ocean floor. Researchers say the structure may explain Bermuda’s unusual elevation and why the island appears to “float” above the surrounding Atlantic seafloor.
Unlike typical volcanic islands formed by magma plumes, Bermuda’s base rock is chemically distinct, suggesting a rare mantle process. Scientists believe the plume-like structure originated deep within Earth’s mantle, pushing upward and creating Bermuda’s unique geology.
The discovery challenges existing models of island formation and mantle dynamics. Experts say it could reshape understanding of how deep-Earth processes influence oceanic crust and island development.
Beyond its scientific significance, the finding adds a new dimension to Bermuda’s reputation, long associated with myths of the Bermuda Triangle. Researchers emphasize that the structure is a natural geological phenomenon, but one that stands apart from anything previously documented.
The study’s authors noted that further exploration is needed to determine how the mantle plume evolved and whether similar hidden structures exist elsewhere beneath the world’s oceans.
