Moscow, March 20, 2026 (Agencies) – Russia claimed its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 249 Ukrainian drones overnight in one of the largest reported aerial engagements of the ongoing conflict, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
In an official statement, the ministry said its “alert air defense systems” successfully countered a wave of fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles launched from Ukraine, targeting multiple regions across western and central Russia.
The drones were reportedly shot down over a wide geographic area, including Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Smolensk, Tver and Tula regions, as well as areas closer to the capital such as the Moscow region. Interceptions were also reported in more distant locations including Leningrad, Novgorod and Pskov regions, along with the Sea of Azov.
Russian authorities did not immediately provide details on casualties or damage, but previous drone attacks have targeted energy facilities, military installations and transport infrastructure.
The scale of the reported interceptions suggests a significant escalation in drone warfare, which has become a central feature of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Both sides have increasingly relied on unmanned systems for long-range strikes, reconnaissance and air defense saturation.
There was no immediate response from Ukrainian officials regarding the claim. Independent verification of the number of drones intercepted was not available.
Military analysts note that such large-scale drone barrages are often aimed at overwhelming air defense systems, forcing them to expend resources while probing for vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure protection.
