ISLAMABAD April 6, 2026 (Khyber Mail): Reports circulating on social media regarding the development of an airbase in Jiwani have sparked debate over its potential strategic significance, though no official confirmation has been issued by Pakistan authorities.
Jiwani, located along the coast of the Gulf of Oman near the Iran-Pakistan border, holds geographical importance due to its proximity to major maritime routes and the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor.
Unverified claims suggest that the development of the site could enable Pakistan to monitor Gulf states, including the United Arab Emirates, and influence maritime activity in the region during a potential conflict.
However, defence analysts have termed such assertions as exaggerated, noting that monitoring distant regions like the UAE would require advanced surveillance systems such as satellites, airborne warning aircraft, and long-range drones, rather than relying solely on an airbase.
Experts also pointed out that the Gulf of Oman is a vast open body of water and not a narrow chokepoint, making claims of it being “choked” in a conflict scenario unrealistic. Control over critical maritime flows is largely associated with the Strait of Hormuz, which lies beyond Pakistan’s direct operational reach.
Analysts said that if developed, the facility at Jiwani would more plausibly serve as a forward operating base for maritime and surveillance missions. Potential deployments could include maritime patrol aircraft such as Sea Sultan, P-3 Orion, airborne early warning platforms like KJ 500 AWACS, Saab 2000 Erieye, and unmanned aerial vehicles for persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
They added that limited deployment of fighter aircraft such as J-10C, JF-17 Thunder could be possible for coastal defence, while transport aircraft and helicopters would support logistics, search and rescue, and operational mobility.
Officials have not issued any statement regarding the reported development, and the claims remain unverified. Observers stressed the need for caution in interpreting such reports amid heightened regional tensions and increased focus on strategic military positioning.
