Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia – September 19, 2025 (Agencies): A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Friday, triggering a tsunami warning that was later lifted.

According to the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Geophysical Survey, the quake’s epicenter was located about 127 kilometers east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a depth of nearly 20 kilometers. The tremor shook homes across the region, with residents reporting strong but brief shaking.

Authorities initially warned of waves up to 1.5 meters along the eastern coastline. However, hydrometeorological officials later confirmed that waves observed were much smaller, ranging from 30 to 62 centimeters, and posed no significant threat.

Governor Vladimir Solodov said all emergency services were placed on high alert, and immediate inspections of residential and public facilities were carried out. So far, there have been no reports of casualties or major damage.

At least ten aftershocks have been recorded, several measuring above magnitude 5, prompting continued monitoring in the seismically active region. Kamchatka lies within the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
