Washington, D.C. (Agencies); July 8, 2025 — The U.S. Department of Defense has begun deploying 200 Marines to Florida as part of a broader effort to support Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with logistics and administrative tasks, U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM) confirmed Thursday.

The Marines—drawn from Marine Support Squadron 272, based at Marine Corps Air Station New River in North Carolina—represent the first wave of a 700-troop mobilization approved by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth following a request from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on May 9.

Additional personnel, including active-duty members, National Guard, and Reservists operating under Title 10 authority, are scheduled to deploy to sites in Texas and Louisiana in the coming weeks.

Officials stressed that the military personnel will not participate in law enforcement operations or have any contact with individuals in ICE custody. Instead, their mission includes transportation support, logistical coordination, and administrative duties, aimed at freeing up ICE agents for frontline responsibilities.

“This deployment is about infrastructure and efficiency, not enforcement,” said a Defense Department official. “Service members are specifically prohibited from involvement in custody management or detention activities.”

While the use of troops to assist domestic law enforcement is often controversial, Pentagon officials highlighted that the practice has long-standing legal precedent. Under the Posse Comitatus Act, the military is permitted to assist civilian agencies under certain conditions—particularly for non-combat support roles.

The move also comes as the Pentagon intensifies its role in southern border operations, recently announcing the establishment of four dedicated military zones in Texas and Arizona to counter illegal border crossings and disrupt narcotics trafficking.

As the situation evolves, DHS and the Pentagon say they remain committed to balancing national security needs with civilian oversight and transparency.
