ISLAMABAD 26 July 2026 (Khyber Mail) – A bird-inspired autonomous surveillance drone attracted significant attention at the Indus Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) Expo 2026 in Islamabad, prompting widespread discussion on social media about Pakistan’s advances in unmanned aerial technologies. However, there has been no official announcement that the system has been inducted into service by the Pakistan Armed Forces.
The drone, identified as “Bird’s Eye,” was exhibited by a Pakistani technology startup participating in the government-backed expo. According to information published by the event organizers, the UAV is an autonomous border patrol and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) platform capable of full mission autonomy and has been demonstrated to national defence stakeholders.
The Indus RAS Expo 2026, organized under the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) in collaboration with the National Centre of Robotics and Automation (NCRA) and the NUST College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (E&ME), ran for two days, July 22-23, at the Pak-China Friendship Centre in Islamabad, and is billed as Pakistan’s largest exhibition dedicated to robotics and autonomous systems. More than 25,000 registered visitors attended over the two days, across 55 pavilions that included 13 startups and 42 organizations from the private and defence sectors. The event spanned eight technology domains including defence robotics, drone technology, industrial automation, maritime autonomous systems, agritech, Physical AI, human-machine collaboration, and AI-powered decision support systems, with exhibitors ranging from NRTC, which showcased unmanned ground vehicles, a quadruped unmanned ground vehicle or “robodog” built for surveillance and operations in challenging environments, alongside anti-drone systems and logistics robots, to Heavy Industries Taxila, Voyager Electronics, and university spin-offs such as NRG Tech and NUST’s CEME Mechatronics wing. The RoboWars arena, where combat robots built by students and startups competed before judges, drew the largest crowds, alongside the RAS Innovation Challenge and a dedicated drone show, with a combined prize pool of 5 million rupees on offer, split between 2 million rupees for RoboWars winners and 3 million rupees distributed among winning teams in the Innovation Challenge.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the event alongside Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. While addressing the inaugural ceremony, he said Pakistan had made notable progress toward self-reliance in defence technology, highlighting that all of the simulators on display had been developed in Pakistan and that more than 60 percent of the country’s drones are now manufactured locally. He announced a $20 million Pakistan Venture Fund to draw investment into local technology, along with a Spark and Elevate programme designed to help turn research into commercially viable businesses, and emphasized continued investment in robotics, autonomous systems, and artificial intelligence.
Although social media posts described the bird-shaped UAV as a newly unveiled Pakistani military surveillance drone, neither the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) nor the Pakistan Army, Pakistan Air Force, or Pakistan Navy has announced its induction or operational deployment.
Defence analysts note that biomimetic or bird-inspired drones remain a niche technology worldwide. China currently leads the field with a publicly demonstrated program: researchers at Northwestern Polytechnical University have built an ornithopter named “Little Falcon,” while state broadcaster CCTV has separately showcased a bird-mimicking drone employing a novel wing-folding crank mechanism, with state media floating potential use in reconnaissance, surveillance and even precision-strike special operations missions. In the United States, a startup called Ornadyne unveiled a crow-shaped, flapping-wing drone named the O1 at SOF Week 2026, designed for low-observable, close-in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, and is aiming to field it with military users within a year. France’s Electronic Bird Control has developed a falcon-shaped biomimetic drone called the E-Raptor, marketed for both military surveillance and civilian applications such as airport bird-strike prevention. Russia has also reportedly explored similar prototype concepts, though public details remain limited.
India does not yet field an indigenously developed bird-shaped drone. In November 2025, Indian defence firm AXISCADES Aerospace & Technologies signed a memorandum of understanding with France’s Electronic Bird Control to bring the E-Raptor into the Indian market for military and civilian use, though the arrangement remains at the partnership stage rather than an operational deployment. India has instead drawn attention for a related but distinct approach, training live birds of prey, including eagles and kites named “Arjun” and “Deep,” fitted with head-mounted cameras to intercept drones and conduct surveillance during exercises with the United States and Japan. This use of trained raptors is a separate technology track from the robotic ornithopters being developed by China, the United States and France.
Until an official announcement is made by the relevant authorities, the Bird’s Eye UAV should be regarded as an indigenous technology demonstrator showcased at the Indus RAS Expo rather than a confirmed operational military platform.
