Islamabad, September 20, 2025 (Khyber Mail): Pakistan has unveiled its Automated Mortar Laying System (AIMS), a locally developed artillery support platform designed to provide precise, rapid, and highly mobile firepower for the Pakistan Army. The system was showcased by Margalla Heavy Industries Limited (MHIL), a defence production company contributing to Pakistan’s growing focus on indigenous military capability.
According to MHIL officials, the AIMS system supports dual calibres—81mm and 120mm mortars—with an effective firing range of up to 6.5 kilometres in its 120mm configuration. Built with a digital fire control system, advanced aiming technology, and automated positioning features, the system enables troops to deliver accurate indirect fire against both fixed and moving targets.
The AIMS system has been highlighted for its potential effectiveness against fortified positions and field bunkers in tactical environments, giving ground forces a reliable tool to neutralize enemy defences during close combat support missions. With its mobility and rapid deployment capability, AIMS can be mounted on various platforms, allowing flexibility in different terrains.
Officials noted that the system has been designed to significantly reduce the time between target identification and fire delivery. The integration of digital fire control and automation also reduces crew workload and enhances survivability in contested environments.
While officials did not disclose specific countries, they confirmed that several foreign militaries have shown interest in the system for its affordability and operational versatility. Industry sources say nations with challenging counter-insurgency and border security requirements could be among the potential buyers.
The induction of AIMS is seen as part of Pakistan’s broader artillery modernization program, which already includes the Chinese-origin SH-15 155mm self-propelled howitzers and upgrades to existing rocket artillery systems. Analysts suggest that indigenous solutions like AIMS complement these platforms by providing short-to-medium range precision firepower, enhancing Pakistan’s layered defence and offensive capabilities.
A defence official commented: “The Automated Mortar Laying System reflects Pakistan’s commitment to self-reliance in defence production. By combining mobility, precision, and affordability, AIMS offers the Army a versatile tool to meet evolving battlefield challenges.”
The deployment of AIMS with the Pakistan Army is expected to commence soon, with further refinements under consideration based on field trials and operational feedback.
