Islamabad, October 12 2025 (Agencies) Pakistan has strongly condemned what it called unprovoked and coordinated attacks launched by Afghan forces along multiple border locations late Saturday night, triggering intense exchanges of fire that continued into Sunday. The clashes prompted Pakistan to close all major and minor border crossings with Afghanistan as tensions escalated.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Taliban forces opened fire on Pakistani border posts from several locations across the border. Pakistani troops responded “with full force” to defend the country’s territorial integrity, targeting Afghan positions engaged in the assault. ISPR said that multiple Afghan border posts were destroyed in the retaliatory strikes.

Security officials confirmed that firefights occurred at more than six locations along the border, including Torkham, Chaman, Kharlachi, Ghulam Khan and Angoor Adda. Following the escalation, Pakistan sealed these crossings to all trade and civilian traffic as a precautionary measure.

The Foreign Office issued a statement condemning the attacks as “unprovoked and unacceptable,” holding the Afghan interim authorities responsible for the deterioration of the situation. “Pakistan reserves the right to respond decisively to any acts that violate its sovereignty,” the statement added, while reaffirming Islamabad’s commitment to regional peace.

Afghan Taliban officials have claimed that their forces launched operations on multiple Pakistani posts overnight, alleging that three Pakistani positions were captured and that multiple Pakistani soldiers were killed. Pakistan has rejected these claims as “baseless propaganda,” maintaining that its forces inflicted significant damage on Afghan positions.

The latest clashes follow a deadly militant assault earlier in the week in Orakzai district near the Afghan border, where at least 17 Pakistani soldiers were martyred in an encounter with militants. Islamabad has repeatedly accused Afghan authorities of failing to rein in cross-border militant groups operating from Afghan soil.

The escalation marks one of the most serious flare-ups along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier since the May 2025 military clash between the two sides. Diplomatic sources say backchannel contacts are underway to prevent a further spiral in hostilities, though the border remains closed and security has been reinforced.
