Rabat – October 3, 2025 (Agencies) – The Ministry of Interior of Morocco has confirmed that over 300 individuals, the majority of them security personnel, were injured during widespread clashes across multiple cities following four consecutive days of protests organized by the youth-led movement Gen Z 212. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the ministry also reported that 409 demonstrators had been placed in police custody, while others were released after identity verification.
According to Rachid El Khalfi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, the protests escalated dangerously in several locations, threatening public safety and order. He stated that some gatherings turned violent, with individuals reportedly using knives, petrol bombs, and throwing stones at law enforcement personnel. By Tuesday night, 263 members of the security forces had sustained injuries of varying severity, while 23 civilians were also injured, including one case requiring ongoing medical treatment.
The Gen Z 212 movement, whose organizers remain anonymous, has been staging demonstrations since Saturday, despite repeated bans by authorities citing the group’s unlicensed status. While previous restrictions had not led to confrontation, this week’s protests marked a sharp escalation in tensions between youth activists and state authorities.
The ministry did not disclose the number of individuals released after initial detention, nor did it provide further details on the legal proceedings against those in custody. The protests have drawn attention to growing discontent among Morocco’s younger population, with calls for reform, accountability, and greater civic participation.
The situation remains tense, with observers warning of potential further unrest if dialogue and de-escalation measures are not urgently pursued.
