Islamabad – 27 October 2026 — (Adnan Hameed) : The Ambassador of Austria in Pakistan, Wolfgang Oliver Kutschera, celebrated Austrian National Day with a reception in Islamabad, bringing together senior government officials, parliamentarians, members of the diplomatic corps, business representatives, and friends of Austria to commemorate Austria’s national day and reaffirm the longstanding friendship between Austria and Pakistan.

The reception was attended by Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik as Guest of Honour.

Addressing the gathering, the Austrian Ambassador to Pakistan highlighted the enduring partnership between the two countries, which have maintained friendly diplomatic relations for more than 72 years. The Ambassador underscored the importance of mutual respect, dialogue, and cooperation in strengthening bilateral ties and expanding collaboration across political, economic, cultural, and people-to-people domains.

The Ambassador highlighted economic cooperation as a key priority, building on Austria’s established presence in Pakistan in sectors including hydropower, green energy, railway technology, medical devices, project management, and food and beverages.

Austria aims to expand these partnerships and explore new areas of business cooperation through its Refocus Austria initiative. The participation of Austrian business representatives at the EU–Pakistan High-Level Business Forum in Islamabad in April 2026, where they constituted the third-largest national group of participants, reflected the considerable potential for deeper economic engagement.

The two countries are also working to reconvene the Austrian-Pakistani Joint Working Group on Economic Cooperation, with an in-person meeting in Islamabad anticipated in spring 2027. The initiative is expected to provide a further platform for identifying opportunities, strengthening commercial links, and advancing bilateral economic cooperation.

The Ambassador also highlighted the significance of the official visit of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif to Vienna in February 2026, at the invitation of Austrian Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker. During the visit, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening trade, investment, and economic cooperation, while underscoring their shared support for multilateralism and the United Nations system.

Commemorating Austria’s decision to adopt permanent neutrality in 1955, the Ambassador emphasized that military neutrality does not mean political indifference. Austria remains committed to international law, human rights, and the principle that the rule of law must prevail in international affairs.

The Ambassador welcomed Austria’s election on 3 June 2026 to serve as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2029 term, following a 15-year campaign under the motto “Partnership – Dialogue – Trust.” The Ambassador expressed sincere gratitude to all countries for its support of Austria’s successful candidacy.

The speech also highlighted Vienna’s role as one of the four official seats of the United Nations and an international centre for diplomacy, science, technology, and cooperation.

Recognizing the wider global challenges posed by ongoing conflicts, rising energy and raw-material prices, and pressures on food affordability, the Ambassador commended Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to facilitate dialogue and mediation, including through the Islamabad Talks and engagement with capitals across the region. Following the ambassador’s speech the Austrian Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, H.E. Ms Beate Meinl-Reisinger, outlined the guiding principles of Austria’s membership in the UN Security Council to the audience by video message.

Beyond political and economic relations, the Austrian Embassy continues to promote cultural and intellectual exchange as an essential pillar of the bilateral partnership.

Recent initiatives have included the Embassy’s Dialogue Residency programme, which brought Austrian law professor Stefan Hammer to Pakistan for academic engagements; literary activities featuring Austrian feminist author Gertraud Klemm; and a lecture and piano concert by Dr. Marko Kölbl of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

Austrian short films featured in recent editions of the EU Film Festival, while Austrian jazz musicians Michaela Rabitsch and Robert Pawlik performed for audiences in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi.

The Embassy also supported Theatre Wallay’s production Teri Hastí, Terá Hunar, a theatre initiative focused on women’s empowerment and female entrepreneurship. Funded by the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the performances reached remote communities in Chiniot and Gujar Khan before concluding at the Pakistan Austria Fachhochschule in Haripur, highlighting the importance of women’s economic participation and grassroots engagement. The ambassador called the Fachhochschule (University Of Applied Sciences) a beacon of academic exchange and cooperation between the two countries.

The Ambassador further recalled the longstanding people-to-people connections between the two countries, including Austria’s historical contributions to Pakistan’s cultural, intellectual, and mountaineering heritage. The development of the Malam Jabba ski resort, with considerable Austrian financial and logistical assistance, was cited as a tangible example of bilateral cooperation and friendship.

Concluding the address, the Ambassador reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to strengthening existing partnerships and building new relationships between Austria and Pakistan. The Ambassador expressed appreciation for the dedication of Austrian and Pakistani colleagues and partners whose contributions have supported the Embassy’s work throughout the past year.

The National Day reception celebrated not only Austria’s history and national values but also the shared commitment of Austria and Pakistan to friendship, dialogue, cooperation, and a stronger partnership for the future.
