Rabat, February 28, 2026 (Agencies) — Finland has expressed support for granting genuine autonomy to the Moroccan Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty, describing it as the most feasible solution to the long-standing dispute.

The position was outlined in a joint communiqué issued in Rabat following talks between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates Nasser Bourita and Finland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen, who is on an official visit to Morocco.

According to the communiqué, Finland considers that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could constitute the most workable framework for resolving the issue. Helsinki reiterated its support for the autonomy plan presented by Morocco, calling it a serious and credible contribution to the United Nations-led political process and a solid basis for achieving a definitive and mutually acceptable political solution.

The two ministers also welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 and reaffirmed their backing for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to advance negotiations aimed at securing a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political settlement to the Moroccan Sahara question.

Finland’s statement adds to growing international support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative within the framework of the UN process, which continues to seek a political resolution acceptable to all parties involved.
