Dear Editor

As an agrarian, I am deeply concerned about the environmental consequences of ongoing conflict in our neighbourhood and in our region.

One potential threat is acid rain, which forms when gases like nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide mix with moisture in the atmosphere, mainly due to industrial emissions and the burning of fossil fuels.

Although all rainwater is naturally slightly acidic, these pollutants increase its intensity and harmful effects. Acid rain can negatively impact human health by aggravating respiratory problems such as asthma and allergies.

More importantly, it poses serious risks to agriculture and the environment by reducing crop yields, damaging forests, harming aquatic life, and degrading soil health.

It can also corrode buildings and historical monuments, including the famous Taj Mahal, which has long faced threats from air pollution.
