Kiev (Agencies): The Ukrainian Air Force announced on Monday the loss of a Su-27 fighter jet during a Russian drone attack. The incident occurred while the aircraft was performing a “complex combat mission” to support ground troops and counter incoming strike UAVs. While the pilot successfully ejected and was hospitalized, details regarding the type of drones involved or the exact location of the event remain unclear.

The Su-27, also known by its NATO designation “Flanker,” is a twin-engine, supersonic, and highly maneuverable air-superiority fighter jet. Designed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau, it was introduced in 1985 and has been a key asset for air defense missions. Ukraine’s Air Force currently has approximately 26 Su-27 fighter jets in active service, which remain critical to the country’s defense efforts. The aircraft boasts a remarkable range of over 3,000 km, a service ceiling exceeding 18,000 meters, and the ability to fly at speeds greater than twice the speed of sound. Armed with radar-guided and infrared-homing missiles, as well as a 30-mm cannon, the Su-27 is renowned for its agility and combat capabilities.

Russian media suggests that the Su-27 was downed while pursuing Geran-2 kamikaze drones, long-range delta-wing UAVs frequently deployed by Moscow in swarm attacks and deep strikes. However, it is uncertain whether the drones directly caused the loss of the jet or if Ukrainian anti-aircraft defenses were involved. A special commission has been formed to investigate the circumstances.

Unverified footage circulating online reportedly shows the aircraft engulfed in flames before spiraling into a wooded area. Incidents of Ukrainian fighter jets being lost while engaging Geran-2 drones have occurred previously, with notable examples dating back to 2022. The ongoing conflict continues to see the evolving use of drone technology on both sides, posing complex challenges for combat operations.
