TEHRAN April 8, 2026 (Agencies): Iran has expressed appreciation to Pakistan for its mediation efforts following the announcement of a two-week ceasefire in the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, speaking on behalf of the Supreme National Security Council, thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir for what he described as “tireless efforts” to help end the war in the region.
According to the statement, the ceasefire was agreed following a request from Washington to begin negotiations, based on a 15-point proposal from the US and a 10-point framework presented by Tehran.
Officials said Pakistan has invited both Iran and the United States to Islamabad for talks aimed at resolving outstanding issues and moving towards a long-term peace agreement.
As part of the temporary arrangement, Iranian authorities indicated that safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be facilitated for a period of two weeks under coordination with its armed forces, subject to operational considerations.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif earlier confirmed the ceasefire, stating that both sides had shown “remarkable wisdom and understanding” and remained engaged in efforts to promote regional peace and stability.
US President Donald Trump also acknowledged the ceasefire, saying it followed discussions with Pakistani leadership and was intended to create space for negotiations on a broader settlement.
However, Trump warned that the proposed framework remains insufficient from Washington’s perspective and indicated that military action could resume if no agreement is reached within the given timeframe.
Analysts say Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement reflects its growing role as a mediator in regional conflicts, as the international community watches closely to see whether the Islamabad talks can lead to a lasting resolution.
