Dubai, 21 November 2025 (Agencies): An Indian Air Force HAL Tejas fighter jet crashed during a flight demonstration at the Dubai Airshow 2025, killing the pilot and casting a shadow over the final day of the prestigious aviation event.

The accident occurred at approximately 2:10 p.m. local time at Al Maktoum International Airport, where the biennial airshow was being held. Eyewitnesses reported the aircraft nose-diving suddenly before erupting into flames upon impact, sending thick black smoke billowing across the runway. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, but the pilot could not be saved.

The Tejas, India’s indigenous light combat aircraft developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), was part of India’s showcase at the airshow. The aircraft had drawn attention earlier in the week as India sought to highlight its growing aerospace capabilities and promote the Tejas as a competitive export fighter. Reports suggest the same aircraft had experienced technical issues during previous demonstrations, including a fuel leak.

The crash is a setback for India’s efforts to market the Tejas internationally and raises questions about safety protocols during high-profile demonstrations. Aviation experts noted that the incident comes at a critical time, as the Indian Air Force prepares to induct the upgraded Tejas Mk-1A variant into service.

Organizers of the Dubai Airshow expressed condolences to the Indian Air Force and the pilot’s family, while Indian officials pledged a full investigation into the cause of the accident. Despite the tragedy, the airshow concluded with scheduled displays, though the mood was subdued as participants reflected on the risks faced by aviators in pushing the limits of modern flight.
