Singapore, June 2, 2026 (Agencies) — India has signed an agreement to supply BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to Vietnam, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh confirmed over the weekend, while revealing that a similar deal with Indonesia is in its final stages.
Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Singh said: “My understanding is that with both Indonesia and with Vietnam, the deal is in the final stages… in fact, for Vietnam, I understand that it has already been signed, probably not publicly announced, but it’s already been signed.”
Vietnam has thus become the second Southeast Asian nation to induct the supersonic cruise missiles into its arsenal. The Philippines made history last year as the first third-party customer of the BrahMos system, taking delivery of an initial batch in April under a $375 million agreement signed in 2023. Vietnamese President To Lam had visited India on an official visit earlier last month.
The BrahMos, named after the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers, is regarded as one of the fastest supersonic cruise missiles in the world. It was jointly developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya rocket design bureau. Originally limited to a range of 180 miles, the missile has since been upgraded for greater reach, drawing heightened interest from Southeast Asian nations amid shifting regional security dynamics.
Versatile in deployment, the BrahMos can be launched from ships, submarines, land-based platforms, and aircraft. It was first unveiled at the MAKS-2001 airshow in Moscow.
Regarding Indonesia, BrahMos is reportedly in advanced negotiations for a deal valued between $200 million and $350 million. Indonesian authorities have confirmed that a preliminary framework for the purchase has been finalised.
Looking ahead, the next phase of the BrahMos programme may involve the joint development of a missile system based on Russia’s Zircon hypersonic missile. BrahMos Aerospace posted record revenue in the last fiscal year, according to the DRDO.
