New Delhi, September 15, 2025 (Agencies): India has deployed a 65-member contingent, including soldiers from the prestigious Kumaon Regiment, to take part in the “Zapad-2025” joint military exercises being conducted by Russia and Belarus. The drills, which simulate large-scale combat operations and defensive maneuvers, are taking place at the Mulino training ground near Nizhny Novgorod, about 65 kilometers from NATO borders.
The Indian Ministry of Defence confirmed that the troops will participate in joint tactical drills, battlefield coordination exercises, and skill development modules. New Delhi stated that the participation is aimed at “strengthening defense cooperation and mutual trust between India and Russia,” and does not signal alignment against any third country.
However, the move has sparked sharp reactions internationally, with Western media, including The Times, warning that India may have “crossed a red line” by joining exercises traditionally perceived as preparing for a potential NATO confrontation. Analysts note that the drills come at a sensitive moment, with tensions between Russia and NATO running high following recent drone incursions into Eastern Europe.
Russia and Belarus have insisted that the exercises are purely defensive and are not directed against any nation. The Zapad series of drills is held regularly, with Belarus announcing that approximately 13,000 troops from both countries are participating this year. Observers from several foreign nations have been invited to monitor the drills.
Strategic experts say India’s participation underscores its commitment to balancing ties with Moscow while maintaining its independent foreign policy. However, they warn that the timing could add friction to New Delhi’s growing security partnership with Washington and its role in forums like the Quad.
