- China’s top anti-graft bodies announce probe of the 75-year-old oil industry veteran, who retired in 2015, days after the Communist Party’s plenum stressed discipline
BEIJING 01 November 2026 (Agencies) – Fu Chengyu, former chairman of the China Petrochemical Corporation, known as Sinopec Group, and former secretary of the company’s leading Party members group, is under investigation for suspected severe violations of Party discipline and the law, China’s top anti-graft body announced on Saturday.
A statement from the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Commission of Supervision said Fu is undergoing a disciplinary review and supervisory investigation. No further details of the allegations were released. The phrase “serious violations of discipline and law” is typically used in announcements of corruption investigations, though the statement did not say so.
Fu, 75, was born in Heilongjiang province and spent decades in China’s oil industry. He joined the China National Offshore Oil Corporation in 1982, later led the company, and in 2011 became chairman and Party group secretary of Sinopec, which is the world’s largest refiner. He retired from Sinopec in May 2015 after reaching retirement age, and afterwards served as a member of the standing committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the country’s top political advisory body.
The announcement came two days after the fifth plenary session of the Party’s 20th Central Committee wrapped up with a focus on strict Party governance and anti-corruption efforts, and more than a decade after Fu left his post at Sinopec. President Xi Jinping has led an anti-corruption campaign since 2012 that has targeted officials, state enterprise executives and military figures, including a number of leaders of China’s state oil companies in recent years.
