- King Charles Hosts US President Amid Pageantry, Protest, and Political Symbolism
Windsor, September 17, 2025 (Agencies): United States President Donald J. Trump was formally welcomed to the United Kingdom today in a ceremonial state visit hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle, marking an unprecedented second state visit for a sitting American president.

The arrival featured a carriage procession, guard of honour, and military fanfare surpassing previous state visits in scale and symbolism. The King and President shared the Irish State Coach, followed by Queen Camilla and First Lady Melania Trump in a separate carriage. The Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Catherine, played prominent roles in the reception, greeting the Trumps upon arrival via Marine One.

A 41-gun salute was fired simultaneously at Windsor Castle and the Tower of London, while 1,300 British military personnel and 120 horses participated in the ceremonial welcome. The event was described by royal correspondents as a “performance of royal soft power” aimed at reinforcing diplomatic ties amid global uncertainty.
Following the procession, the dignitaries entered Windsor Castle for a private state lunch, with a joint flypast by UK Red Arrows and US F-35 fighter jets scheduled later in the day. A white-tie state banquet at St George’s Hall will conclude the evening, where both leaders are expected to deliver formal remarks.
In a symbolic exchange of gifts:
- The King presented Trump with a hand-bound leather volume commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, and the Union Flag flown over Buckingham Palace on his second inauguration.
- The Queen gifted Melania Trump a silver and enamel bowl crafted by Northern Irish artist Cara Murphy, and a personalized Anya Hindmarch handbag.
- Trump reciprocated with a replica of President Eisenhower’s sword, and a Tiffany & Co. vintage brooch for the Queen.
However, the visit was not without controversy. Hours before the president’s arrival, activists projected images of Trump and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein onto Windsor Castle. The stunt, orchestrated by the campaign group Led By Donkeys, led to the arrest of four individuals by Thames Valley Police on charges of malicious communications.
Despite the protests, Trump appeared visibly pleased, calling the UK “a place that warms my heart,” and referring to King Charles as “my friend.” The president and First Lady will remain at Windsor overnight before meeting Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Chequers on Thursday for bilateral talks.
