ZAGREB, May 19, 2026 (Agencies) – Croatian President Zoran Milanovi? has refused to approve the appointment of a new Israeli ambassador to Croatia, in what Israeli sources described as an unprecedented diplomatic dispute between the two countries, according to Israeli media reports.
Hebrew news outlet Ynet reported that Israeli diplomat Nisan Amdor, selected last November to replace Ambassador Gary Koren in Zagreb, will instead assume the role of chargé d’affaires once Koren’s term ends later this month, since that position does not require presidential approval.
The refusal marks the first time a Croatian president has declined to approve a foreign ambassador, a move described as a serious departure from diplomatic protocol. Milanovi? is also reportedly refusing to approve a replacement for Croatian ambassador to Tel Aviv Vesela Merden Korac, whose posting has already extended beyond its normal term.
Israeli sources quoted by Ynet described Milanovi? as a controversial political figure who has recently made remarks viewed in Israel as anti-Israel and antisemitic.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry said it is working with Croatian authorities to resolve the dispute surrounding the status of the incoming envoy.
