Beijing, April 17, 2026 (Agencies): BYD is considering a move into Formula 1, potentially becoming the first Chinese carmaker to enter the world’s premier motorsport as sweeping regulation changes take effect from 2026.

The reported interest comes as the FIA prepares to implement new power unit rules that will see a near 50-50 split between internal combustion engines and electric motor output, significantly increasing the role of electrification in the sport.

Industry analysts say the regulatory shift aligns with BYD’s strengths in battery technology, electric drivetrains and hybrid systems, positioning the company well to compete in the next generation of Formula 1 power units. The company has already gained global attention for its rapid battery charging technology and vertically integrated EV production model.

If confirmed, BYD could enter the championship either as a power unit supplier or through collaboration with an existing team, though a full works entry would require substantial financial investment and regulatory approval. New entrants must meet strict criteria set by both the FIA and Formula 1 Management, including a significant anti-dilution fee.

The potential entry would place BYD alongside established and incoming manufacturers such as Audi, Honda, Ford Motor Company, Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari, intensifying competition in the hybrid era.

Experts note that while Formula 1 does not utilise external fast-charging during races, BYD’s expertise in battery efficiency, thermal management and power electronics could provide a competitive edge under the new rules, which emphasise energy recovery and electrical deployment.

A potential Formula 1 programme would also serve as a major branding platform for BYD as it expands into international markets, particularly in Europe, while reinforcing its technological credentials in high-performance hybrid systems.

Despite the opportunity, analysts caution that entry into Formula 1 represents a strategic shift for BYD, requiring sustained high investment and long-term commitment in a sport known for its technological complexity and financial demands.
