Events and memories keep emerging in everyone’s life. However, it becomes quite cumbersome to reflect in the true sense — especially when you’re walking down the steep, winding lanes of memory.

The past moments appear like a golden array. Tough, unbearing, subtle — all seem alike, making you smile, glitter, and giggle. At times, someone might curiously ask the reason behind your sudden smile, but describing it becomes too chaotic to share.

  • Those College Days

During our college days — and that too in a boarding college — life moved at a momentous, hectic, and exciting pace. We were too young and immature to comprehend the intricacies of life ahead. Yet, those fleeting moments were quietly becoming our most treasured assets.

The mornings would begin with the Azan-e-Fajr and continue nonstop till late night. After offering the morning prayers, we’d rush for physical training — a torture in disguise. Running on the roads, keeping our eyes half-shut as gusts from a nearby cement factory would fling sharp particles into our faces. I’ve heard that factory has long since closed.

  • The Daily Hustle

Returning to our barracks, a race for the showers would begin, followed by a hasty breakfast and the start of classes. The quest to find a chair under a fan was an adventure in itself.

It was during our intermediate classes that we first encountered computers — in a highly secured and sacred setting. Entering the computer room meant removing our heavy shoes, a ritual in itself. Though computers never became my friends, those 40-odd minutes in the air-conditioned room were a luxury.

  • The Weekend Escapes

Back then, weekends fell on Thursday and Friday. The excitement was palpable — a long-awaited chance to savour the food of our choice at a restaurant in Saddar, Karachi. Post-lunch, it was a mad dash for the latest movie showing at Nishat or Capri Cinema.

  • Competitions & Comradery

Debates and declamation contests were fierce. Hockey and swimming were the marquee events, while basketball matches and their spirited preparations were unforgettable. The basketball court wasn’t just a sports ground; it was a lively social hub. The adjoining ice-cream parlour offered a much-needed retreat after grueling activities.

Friendships forged in those years have endured beautifully. Even today, we meet, greet, and look after each other. What’s heartening is how this camaraderie has passed on to our families, who now share the same bond.

  • Humour Under Pressure

The best humour thrives in the toughest conditions, and we had plenty — raw, uncensored, and endlessly memorable. The only time we became selfish was at the start of vacations. At Cantt Station, Karachi, securing a spot in the bogie was a battle, but soon after, gossips resumed.

Stopovers at Hyderabad and Multan were pure joy. Hyderabad’s famed rabri was a much-awaited delight. Multan, with its crispy samosas, strong tea, and exquisite blue pottery, held a charm of its own.

  • A Call for Shared Memories

My mind continues to mingle with these recollections. Perhaps, dear reader, you too hold such memories. Your stories could help revive moments we might have unintentionally overlooked.

So, smile. Life was beautiful, and in these memories — it still is.
