Sylhet (Agencies) July 11, 2025 — Elite units from the Bangladesh Army Para-Commando Brigade and the U.S. Army Special Forces are currently engaged in Exercise Tiger Lightning 2025, a high-intensity joint military drill underway at Jalalabad Cantonment, Sylhet. The six-day exercise, which began on July 8 and will conclude on July 13, aims to enhance interoperability, counter-terrorism capabilities, and peacekeeping readiness between the two forces.

The exercise includes a series of advanced tactical modules, such as:

  • Urban warfare simulations in built-up environments
  • Hostage rescue operations under live-fire conditions
  • Night reconnaissance and infiltration missions
  • Close-quarters combat and tactical marksmanship drills

Troops are utilizing M4 carbines, night vision systems, and real-time battlefield simulation platforms to replicate complex operational scenarios. The training also incorporates subject-matter expert exchanges on medical evacuation, explosive ordnance disposal, and intelligence coordination.

The Para-Commando Brigade, headquartered in Sylhet, is Bangladesh’s premier special operations unit, renowned for missions like Operation Thunderbolt and Operation Twilight. The U.S. contingent is represented by the 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), known for its operational footprint across the Indo-Pacific.

Senior military officials from both sides attended the opening ceremony, emphasizing the strategic importance of the exercise. “Tiger Lightning is not just a drill—it’s a symbol of our shared commitment to regional stability and tactical excellence,” said a spokesperson from the Bangladesh Army.

The exercise is part of a broader defense partnership between Bangladesh and the United States, focusing on capacity building, humanitarian assistance, and disaster response preparedness. It follows recent high-level visits, including that of Lt. Gen. Joel P. Vowell, Deputy Commander of U.S. Army Pacific, who reaffirmed support for Bangladesh’s military modernization efforts.
