New Delhi, September 15, 2025 (Agencies): Adani Enterprises Ltd has been awarded the contract to construct a 12.9-kilometre ropeway between Sonprayag and Kedarnath under the Government of India’s Parvatmala Pariyojana, a flagship initiative to boost ropeway infrastructure in the country.
Valued at INR 4,081 crore, the project will transform access to one of India’s most revered pilgrimage sites by reducing the journey time from a grueling 8–9 hour trek to just 36 minutes. Using advanced Tri-Cable Detachable Gondola (3S) technology, the ropeway will carry up to 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction, significantly easing congestion during the peak pilgrimage season, when nearly 20 lakh devotees visit the Kedarnath temple annually.
The Letter of Award (LoA) was issued by National Highways Logistics Management Ltd (NHLML), and the project will be executed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Adani Enterprises will operate and maintain the ropeway for 29 years after its completion, which is expected within six years.
Kaziranga-based experts note that the ropeway will not only make the pilgrimage safer and more accessible but will also reduce environmental stress on the fragile Himalayan ecosystem by decreasing foot traffic along the steep trekking path from Gaurikund. The project is also expected to create jobs, stimulate local businesses, and strengthen the state’s tourism economy.
Officials hailed the project as a milestone in Uttarakhand’s infrastructure development, promising modern facilities, improved safety, and an enhanced spiritual experience for pilgrims traveling to the sacred shrine.
