• Defence minister confirms fatalities and injuries at CFB Wainwright; military sources say at least seven are dead and dozens hurt, while the cause remains unconfirmed

WAINWRIGHT 18 OCTOBER 2026 (Agencies) – A deadly fire and reported explosion at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta has killed and injured members of the military, with the Canadian Armed Forces saying on Sunday that the situation was still evolving and the full extent of the impact remained under assessment.

Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed on Saturday that there had been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base, one of Canada’s busiest military training installations, but gave no figures. Global News, citing multiple military sources, reported that at least seven people were dead and dozens injured. Officials have not confirmed that toll, and federal and provincial counts were still being worked out.

The incident began at about 4 pm on Saturday, according to the Wainwright RCMP. Global News reported, citing Canadian Armed Forces sources, that a live-fire training exercise hit a gas line or gas well on the base, causing an explosion, and that the fire then spread in wind gusts of up to 100 kilometres an hour. Officials have not confirmed this account. McGuinty said the military and the RCMP are investigating the circumstances, and he gave no cause. Global News has not established whether it was a pipeline or a well that was struck, and no investigator has yet said whether a round fired in the exercise reached any gas infrastructure. The military has also said it will withhold official casualty figures until next of kin have been notified. The Municipal District of Wainwright said the fire crossed the base fence and spread rapidly into the surrounding rural area. In its latest update, the district said the wildfire was being held and a fire watch was in place.

Health facilities near the base were quickly overwhelmed. A doctor at an Edmonton hospital, about 180 kilometres away, told the CBC that casualties were being taken to hospitals across the city, and one official called the incident a “one in every 15- to 25-year disaster”. More than a dozen Canadian Armed Forces personnel were parachuted into Wainwright late on Saturday to help at the town’s health centre, according to Global News. The mayor of Wainwright, quoted by the CBC, described it as the largest mass casualty event the town has seen.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said his thoughts were with all those affected. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called the fire “significant and tragic” and said it was affecting many military personnel, while Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said his province was sending assistance. Alberta MP Dane Lloyd said he had heard of significant casualties. The head of the Canadian Armed Forces said the military was working closely with federal, provincial and local authorities.

CFB Wainwright, about 180 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, is home to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, which prepares units for combat operations through realistic battlefield exercises, and to the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre, which provides basic infantry training.
