MADRID, October 15, 2026 (Agencies) – Spanish police in Ibiza are investigating suspected irregularities in documents establishing paternal lineage among individuals originating from the Tindouf camps, according to a document dated October 1, 2026.

The document, attributed to the National Police’s Unit Against Immigration Networks and Document Forgery (UCRIF), says the suspected irregularities involve lineage records allegedly submitted to Spanish organisations and companies. Authorities are examining the authenticity of the documents, although responsibility for any suspected forgery has not yet been established.

The case has implications for applications for Spanish nationality by Sahrawis and their descendants born in the Sahara when it was under Spanish administration. The documents could be relevant to eligibility under a proposed Spanish law concerning nationality for Sahrawis.

The report also raises the possibility of networks linked to the Polisario Front or affiliated groups facilitating the production or circulation of forged documents. However, these remain suspicions, and investigators have yet to determine whether any individuals or organisations were involved.

The case has highlighted the importance of verifying the origin and authenticity of civil-status documents. The report calls for improved document traceability, stricter verification procedures and closer cooperation among relevant institutions.

No final findings on responsibility have been reported.
