BEIRUT, April 14, 2026 (Agencies): Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for shooting down a U.S. F-16 fighter jet in recent days, marking a sharp escalation in the Lebanon war and raising fears of wider regional confrontation.
According to Hezbollah’s military wing, the aircraft was struck by a missile in the northern occupied territories near the Lebanon border, an area that has seen heavy clashes since Israeli ground operations began in mid?March. The incident represents one of the most serious losses for U.S. forces since their involvement in the conflict.
The U.S. military has not yet issued a detailed statement, though reports indicate at least one crew member is missing following related aircraft losses in the region. Rescue operations are said to be ongoing.
Hezbollah’s announcement comes as Israeli forces continue overnight strikes in southern Lebanon, with the Israel Defense Forces claiming to have destroyed a “loaded and ready?to?launch rocket launcher.” The Lebanese front has become increasingly volatile, with Hezbollah expanding its use of advanced missile systems capable of targeting high?performance aircraft.
The downing of the F?16 coincides with the collapse of U.S.–Iran peace talks in Islamabad, where 21 hours of negotiations ended without agreement. Analysts warn that the Lebanon front could now become the flashpoint for further escalation, especially as Iran continues to back Hezbollah militarily.
Regional observers note that the incident underscores Hezbollah’s growing anti?air capabilities, likely supported by Iranian technology, and places Washington in a difficult position as it balances military commitments with diplomatic efforts.
Pakistan, which has played a central role in mediating between Washington and Tehran, has urged all parties to uphold the ceasefire agreement despite the mounting violence.
The loss of a U.S. fighter jet to Hezbollah marks a turning point in the conflict, highlighting the risks of direct American involvement in Lebanon and raising questions about the future trajectory of the war.
