Rabat, March 27, 2026 (Khyber Mail) — In a significant diplomatic development, the Czech Republic has formally declared its support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal regarding the Sahara region, calling it “the most feasible solution” to the long-standing territorial dispute.
The announcement was made in a Joint Declaration signed in Rabat following a meeting between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Czech Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Petr Macinka, who is visiting the Kingdom for the first time.
The declaration outlines the Czech Republic’s intent to act in accordance with its position, including extending the consular coverage of its embassy in Rabat to the Sahara region. The Czech Ambassador to Morocco will also travel to the Sahara to facilitate visits by Czech entrepreneurs and promote joint economic initiatives.
The Czech Republic welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025) and reaffirmed its view that Morocco’s 2007 autonomy proposal represents “the most appropriate, serious, credible and realistic basis” for achieving a just and lasting political solution.
Both ministers reiterated their support for the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Sahara and emphasized the importance of advancing the political process toward a definitive resolution of the regional dispute.
This move marks a notable shift in European engagement with the Sahara issue, aligning Prague’s stance with a growing number of countries recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty and autonomy framework as a viable path forward.
