Rabat, January 21, 2026 (Khyber Mail): Sweden has expressed its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a credible basis for negotiations to reach a lasting solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, in light of the recently adopted United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797.
The position was outlined in an official statement issued by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs following a telephone conversation between Sweden’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Maria Malmer Stenengard, and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.
According to the statement, Sweden considers Morocco’s Autonomy Plan a serious and realistic framework for advancing negotiations under UN auspices, aimed at achieving a definitive political solution to the long-standing issue.
With this announcement, Sweden joins the majority of European Union member states and more than two-thirds of United Nations member countries that have voiced support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative.
UN Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted on October 31, 2025, reaffirmed that a solution based on genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the most feasible and pragmatic approach to resolving the dispute, the statement recalled.
Morocco has welcomed Sweden’s position, viewing it as further international recognition of its efforts to reach a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political settlement to the Sahara issue.
