MISHIMA, Japan, Dec. 26 (Agencies) – A man armed with a knife and suspected chemical substance attacked workers at a tire factory in central Japan on Friday, leaving at least 15 people injured, authorities said.

The incident occurred at a Yokohama Rubber Co. facility in Mishima, Shizuoka prefecture, west of Tokyo. According to the Fujisan Nanto Fire Department, eight people were stabbed and rushed to hospitals, with five reported in serious condition. Seven others were treated after being exposed to what officials believe was bleach thrown during the assault.

Police arrested a 38-year-old man at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder. Shizuoka prefectural police did not immediately provide details about his motive. Japanese media, including public broadcaster NHK, reported that the suspect was carrying a survival knife and wearing what appeared to be a gas mask.

The attack shocked the community and raised concerns about workplace safety. While Japan is known for its strict gun control laws and relatively low crime rates, the country has seen a string of high-profile knife attacks in recent years.

Authorities said investigations are ongoing, and further information about the suspect and victims will be released as it becomes available.
