Vienna, September 21, 2025 (Agencies): Physicists have reported striking findings from a series of quantum experiments that suggest choices made in the present can appear to influence events that occurred in the past. While the results do not mean history can be rewritten, they highlight the strange, counterintuitive nature of quantum mechanics.

In so-called delayed-choice and quantum eraser experiments, scientists showed that the way a particle is measured can determine whether it behaves as a wave or particle — even if the decision on how to measure it is made after the particle has already been detected. Similarly, in delayed-choice entanglement swapping experiments, researchers found that when one observer decides to entangle two photons, other photons already measured by different observers behave as if they had been entangled all along.

Anton Zeilinger’s research group in Vienna, along with other teams, has led much of this work, revealing that measurement choices made in the present shape the correlations seen in data recorded earlier. “Our virtual door is open to these kinds of paradoxical insights,” one physicist remarked, stressing that the effect is not about changing the past but about how quantum information is revealed.

Some theorists interpret these results through retrocausality, the idea that future conditions help define past states. Others argue that no true backward-in-time influence occurs — instead, quantum mechanics simply encodes correlations that defy classical intuition.

Experts emphasize that despite appearances, no experiment has shown that people can physically alter recorded events or send information back in time. “Quantum mechanics remains consistent — it may seem as if the past is affected, but in reality, it is our knowledge and interpretation of the system that changes,” explained one researcher.

The debate underscores how quantum physics continues to challenge conventional ideas of cause and effect. While scientists agree these effects do not permit time travel or paradoxes, the findings deepen the mystery of how reality is shaped at the most fundamental level.
