Beijing (Agencies), 13 August 2025 — Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva reaffirmed their commitment to global peace and multilateral cooperation during a phone conversation on Tuesday, with both leaders emphasizing the role of the “Friends of Peace” group in facilitating a political settlement to the ongoing Ukraine crisis.

President Xi praised Brazil’s leadership in the Global South and expressed China’s readiness to work with Brazil to promote unity, self-reliance, and sustainable development among emerging economies. “China is ready to work with Brazil to build a more just world and a more sustainable planet,” Xi said, noting that bilateral ties are currently at their strongest in history.

The two leaders discussed the alignment of their national development strategies and agreed to deepen cooperation in trade, diplomacy, and global governance. Xi congratulated Brazil on successfully hosting the recent BRICS Summit, calling the mechanism a vital platform for consensus-building among developing nations.

Xi also voiced support for Brazil’s sovereignty and legitimate interests, urging countries to stand united against unilateralism and protectionism. He emphasized the importance of defending international norms and ensuring the success of the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Belem, Brazil.

President Lula, in turn, lauded China’s commitment to multilateralism and its responsible role in global affairs. He expressed Brazil’s desire to strengthen strategic alignment with China and enhance coordination in platforms such as BRICS. Lula also briefed Xi on Brazil’s current relations with the United States and reiterated his country’s principled stance on sovereignty and non-interference.

Both leaders agreed to expand the influence of the Friends of Peace initiative, positioning it as a diplomatic channel for resolving the Ukraine conflict through dialogue and political engagement.

The conversation underscored the growing strategic partnership between China and Brazil, rooted in shared values and a common vision for a more equitable international order.
