Beijing (Agencies), 15 August 2025 — The world’s first fully autonomous 5v5 humanoid robot football match is set to kick off today at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing, marking a historic milestone in artificial intelligence and robotics. The match will be the centerpiece of the 2025 World Humanoid Robot Games, which run from August 14 to 17 and feature over 500 humanoid robots competing in 538 events across 26 disciplines.
Unlike previous demonstrations, the football match will be entirely controlled by AI algorithms, with no human intervention. Ten humanoid robots will compete on the same field, relying on swarm intelligence and collaborative decision-making technologies to execute gameplay. The match also marks the first time a humanoid robot football event will be staged at an Olympic venue.
The Games have drawn 280 teams from 16 countries across five continents, including 192 university-based teams and 88 corporate teams. Participants hail from nations such as Germany, Australia, the United States, and Brazil, showcasing humanoid robots from 127 brands. Each day of the competition is divided into morning and afternoon sessions, each lasting approximately three hours.
Beyond the headline football match, the event includes a wide array of contests. A “100-meter dash” will see 90 teams compete for the title of fastest humanoid robot, while the top six finishers from the world’s first humanoid robot half-marathon held in April will reunite for a showcase race. Another highlight is the freestyle combat competition, featuring two special teams composed of six Olympic medalists, including judo champion Yang Xiuli, swimmer Zhang Lin, and synchronized swimmer Chang Si.
As part of the event’s legacy, the “Beijing Humanoid Robot Training Base” was officially unveiled on Friday. Additionally, the newly completed “Panda Eye” training base—the world’s first professional stadium for humanoid robot football—has been introduced. Located in the sunken plaza west of the Oval, the dome-shaped structure features an advanced ETFE membrane that regulates environmental conditions while allowing natural light to filter through, blending sci-tech precision with architectural elegance.
Adjacent to the venue, the ROBOLAND Robot Camp promotes the philosophy of “human-robot integration” and is expected to evolve into a global hub for humanoid robotics, fostering international collaboration and accelerating industry development.
The 2025 World Humanoid Robot Games not only push the boundaries of AI and robotics but also signal a new era of autonomous competition and technological artistry.
