Petropavlovsk-Kamchatky, Russia (Agencies) July 30, 2025 — A massive 8.7 magnitude earthquake jolted eastern Russia early Wednesday, sending shockwaves across the Pacific and triggering tsunami warnings in multiple countries.

The quake struck at approximately 04:15 local time off the coast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a remote city on the Kamchatka Peninsula, known for its high seismic activity. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the tremor originated at a shallow depth of 19.3 kilometers, a factor that often contributes to intense ground shaking and elevated tsunami risks. Initial assessments pegged the quake at magnitude 8.0, but it was swiftly revised to 8.7 following updated seismographic data. The event was classified as shallow reverse faulting within the Kuril-Kamchatka Arc, where the Pacific Plate subducts beneath the North American Plate.

Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov described the tremor as “the strongest in decades.” While no fatalities have been reported as of press time, a kindergarten building sustained significant damage, and localized power outages were noted across multiple districts. Emergency response teams have been mobilized to assess infrastructure damage and provide support to affected communities.

Tsunami warnings were issued across the Pacific region, including Japan, where authorities warned of potential waves reaching 3 meters, urging evacuations along eastern coastlines, particularly in Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Honshu. The United States issued tsunami advisories for Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, with wave modeling suggesting minimal but noticeable sea-level fluctuations. The U.S. West Coast, including California, Oregon, and Washington, remained on alert. Pacific islands including Hawaii, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands initiated precautionary monitoring protocols. No major wave activity had been observed at the time of publication.

Kamchatka is one of the world’s most active seismic zones. The region last experienced an earthquake of comparable magnitude in 1963, underscoring the rarity and severity of Wednesday’s tremor. Experts from the International Seismological Centre (ISC) and Russia’s Geophysical Service are coordinating real-time monitoring and dissemination of data to relevant authorities across Asia and North America.
