RAF Leeming, North Yorkshire (Agencies) July 19, 2025: The United Kingdom has launched its largest-ever tri-service rotary-wing training operation, Exercise Hades Warrior, showcasing the full spectrum of British helicopter air power in a high-intensity, two-week assessment designed to certify elite pilots as Qualified Weapons Instructors (QWIs) and Qualified Helicopter Tactics Instructors (QHTIs).

Held at RAF Leeming, the exercise brings together Chinook HC.Mk 6, Merlin Mk2, Apache AH-64E, and Wildcat AH.1 helicopters from the Royal Navy’s Commando Helicopter Force, the British Army, and the Royal Air Force’s Joint Aviation Command. Over 200 pilots, aircrew, and ground support staff are participating in the rigorous training, which includes air-to-air combat, electronic warfare, and air assault missions across the rugged terrain of North Yorkshire.

Squadron Leader Macgillivray, Exercise Lead from 22 Squadron, emphasized the strategic importance of the program: “We’ve designed the course to upskill frontline rotary pilots and rear crew to instruct war-fighting disciplines. Training in a tri-service environment sharpens the interoperable capabilities of Joint Aviation Command assets”.

Spectacular aerial formations have been observed, including six helicopters flying in coordinated maneuvers—demonstrating the precision and cohesion of UK rotary forces. The exercise also serves as the rotary component of Exercise Agile Spear, an annual joint training initiative hosted at RAF Leeming.

Upon successful completion, the ten selected aviators will return to their respective squadrons as tactical leaders, responsible for shaping future aircrew and operational doctrine across all services.

RAF Benson, the home of 22 Squadron and a key hub for UK helicopter operations, plays a vital support role in the exercise. The base also hosts civilian services such as the National Police Air Service and Thames Valley Air Ambulance, underscoring its dual military-civilian utility.

Exercise Hades Warrior began on July 14 and is scheduled to conclude on July 27, marking a pivotal moment in Britain’s commitment to enhancing rotary-wing combat readiness and joint force integration
