Porto Sant’Elpidio, Italy (Agencies) July 17, 2025: Austrian extreme sports icon Felix Baumgartner, renowned for his record-breaking 2012 jump from the stratosphere, has died in a paragliding accident on Italy’s Adriatic coast. He was 56.
According to Italian media reports, Baumgartner was paragliding near the coastal town of Porto Sant’Elpidio when he reportedly felt unwell mid-flight and lost control of his aircraft. The paraglider crashed into a hotel swimming pool around 4:00 PM local time. A woman nearby sustained minor injuries during the incident, while Baumgartner was declared dead on impact2.
Just hours before the accident, Baumgartner posted a photo on Instagram referencing strong winds, hinting at challenging flight conditions. The tragic crash occurred during what was described as a recreational flight, part of his vacation in the Marche region of Italy4.
