Kerr County, Texas / Ruidoso, New Mexico: July 9, 2025 — As the United States reels from its deadliest inland flood in nearly half a century, devastating flash floods in both Texas and New Mexico have claimed more than 114 lives in just five days, with hundreds still unaccounted for.

“Wall of Water” Devastates Kerr County Over 100 billion gallons of water, equivalent to Niagara Falls’ daily discharge, inundated Kerr County, Texas, on July 4, transforming holiday celebrations into tragedy. The Guadalupe River surged 26 feet in less than an hour, drowning towns such as Hunt, Ingram, and Kerrville. Entire neighborhoods were wiped out, with at least 111 confirmed fatalities and over 160 people still missing, including dozens of children who were attending summer camps. The surge, triggered by remnants of Tropical Storm Barry, has been described by survivors as a “black wall of death.”

New Mexico’s Ruidoso Suffers Monsoon Catastrophe Just days later, on July 8, the mountain town of Ruidoso, New Mexico, was struck by extreme flash floods after monsoonal rains pounded wildfire burn scar zones. The deluge killed three people, including two young children, and forced dozens of rooftop rescues. Officials say the floodwaters rose up to 20 feet, leaving behind collapsed bridges, mud-choked streets, and snapped communication lines. Emergency alerts were issued too late for some, and authorities are urging federal intervention.

Both disasters expose the growing threat of climate-linked hydrological extremes, especially in terrain already weakened by drought or wildfire. President Trump is expected to visit the Texas flood zone by week’s end. In the meantime, the FEMA and National Guard are coordinating joint recovery operations in both states.
